Principal Message

Dear Bahia Vista Parents and Guardians,

Dear Bahia Vista Families,
This week we are excited to launch our Second Step curriculum for TK–5th grade! Second Step is our schoolwide program that helps students build important social-emotional skills such as empathy, kindness, problem solving, and emotional regulation. These lessons support our vision of creating a safe, caring, and inclusive learning environment for every child.

Lesson #1: Skills for Learning
In this first lesson, all students will focus on the foundational skills they need to be successful learners in the classroom and beyond. Across the grade levels, students will be practicing:
  • Listening attentively
  • Focusing attention
  • Using self-talk to stay on task
  • Being assertive in a respectful way
These core skills help children become better learners and community members. For example, in TK and Kindergarten, students may practice “listening rules” with fun visuals and songs. In upper grades, students will learn how to recognize when they need to refocus and use strategies to stay engaged in learning.

How You Can Support at Home:
  • Ask your child what they learned about skills for learning this week.
  • Practice “attentive listening” at home by taking turns sharing and retelling stories.
  • Praise your child when you notice them using self-talk (“I can do this,” “Stay focused,” “Try again”).
Together, we can reinforce these important skills at school and at home, helping our students grow both academically and socially. Thank you for partnering with us to build a strong foundation for our children’s success. We are excited to continue this journey with our Bahia Vista community!

In service,
Julio Villalobos, Ed.D.

Attendance Matters!

At Bahia Vista Elementary School,

We believe that every day counts. Regular attendance is one of the most important factors in ensuring student success. When students are present, they engage in learning, build strong habits, and strengthen our school community.

I am excited to share that from August 25 – September 5, our students showed great commitment to being present and ready to learn. A special congratulations goes out to Ms. Solano’s Class and Ms. Mackay’s Class for achieving the highest attendance rate during this time period! Both classes were given a dragon stuff animal that they keep for the week and return it at our next PBIS rally. Your dedication to showing up every day sets a shining example for our entire school.

Let’s continue to make attendance a priority. Together, we can help our students build a bright future—one school day at a time!

PBIS "Dragon" Dollars

Dragon
We are excited to kick off this year’s Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program with the launch of Dragon Dollars! This program is designed to recognize and celebrate the positive choices our students make each day.

At our school, we live by three important expectations: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Ready to Learn. When students demonstrate these behaviors—in the classroom, hallways, cafeteria, playground, or anywhere on campus—they may be rewarded with Dragon Dollars. Dragon Dollars can then be used for special incentives, privileges, or fun rewards, giving students the chance to see that positive actions lead to positive outcomes.

We are proud of our students for working hard to make our school a safe, supportive, and successful place for everyone. Thank you for encouraging your child to model respect, responsibility, and readiness each day. Together, we will continue to build a culture where positive behavior is noticed and celebrated.

Let’s make this year a great one—Go Dragons!

Bahia Vista Student Leadership Opportunities

At our school, we believe that every child has the potential to lead, inspire, and make a difference. One way we nurture this growth is through our Student Council, which provides opportunities for students in grades 3–5 to take on meaningful leadership roles.

This year, our Student Council is organized into sub-committees that allow students to share their voices, strengthen our school community, and practice the values of responsibility, collaboration, and service:
  • Dragon Leaders: Fostering kindness, respect, and positive problem-solving, our Dragon Leaders serve as role models for creating a safe and caring environment.
  • Green Team: Students work together on projects that promote sustainability and care for our earth, reminding all of us to be mindful of our environment.
  • Culture Keeper Team: Celebrating diversity and school spirit, this team helps uphold our traditions while encouraging inclusivity and belonging for all.
  • Valet Program: Supporting safe and smooth arrival procedures, our valet leaders model responsibility and service by assisting with daily school routines.

Through these programs, our students are not just learning about leadership—they are practicing it in real and impactful ways. We are proud to see their ideas, energy, and commitment shape the culture of our school each day.

3rd through 5th grade students can sign up by letting their teachers know they are interested in a committee by Monday September 8.
