Dear Bahia Vista Families,
Second Step Lesson- Unit 2 Lesson 6
This week in our Second Step social-emotional learning program, students in TK–5th grade are continuing Unit 2: Emotion Management, focusing on Lesson 6. This lesson helps students recognize strong feelings and learn healthy strategies to calm down before responding.
Across grade levels, students are building skills to:
-
Notice body signals that tell them they are having a strong emotion (like anger, frustration, or excitement).
-
Name their feelings to better understand and manage them.
-
Use calm-down strategies such as deep breathing, counting, or taking a break before reacting.
Here’s a snapshot of what students are learning by grade:
-
TK–1st Grade: Students practice identifying when they feel upset and learn how to calm their bodies using belly breathing and positive self-talk.
-
2nd–3rd Grade: Students discuss how thoughts can influence feelings and explore calm-down steps—Stop, Name Your Feeling, Calm Down—to make thoughtful choices.
-
4th–5th Grade: Students learn how strong emotions can affect decision-making and practice strategies to pause and regain control before taking action.
💡 Try this at home:
Ask your child, “What can you do to calm down when you feel upset or frustrated?” Encourage them to show you their favorite calm-down technique—maybe they’ll teach you a new one! Together, we’re helping our students build lifelong emotional awareness and self-control—skills that support kindness, problem-solving, and success in school and beyond.
Safe Routes to School Survey- Important!
Please take 10 minutes to answer this survey to tell us your thoughts about how your student gets to and from school and how they engage with the Safe Routes to Schools program. Your feedback is ESSENTIAL for Safe Routes to Schools’ program development serving our school and 26,000 students in our county. Thank you!
The Transportation Authority of Marin funds the Safe Routes’ crossing guards, pedestrian and bike education, encouragement events (e.g. International Walk to School Day), Task Force meetings, suggested route maps, and much more. Your help is vital for program funding to address the needs of your family and others. Questions? Contact: DHoffman@parametrix.com.

At Bahia Vista Elementary School,
We believe that every day counts. Regular attendance is one of the most important factors in ensuring student success. When students are present, they engage in learning, build strong habits, and strengthen our school community.
I am excited to share that from October 14-16, our students showed great commitment to being present and ready to learn. A special congratulations goes out to Ms. Cherian's, Ms. DiSanto's and Ms. Dominguez’ Class (98.48%) with a 98.48% attendance rate for primary grade (TK-2nd) and Ms. Cherbero's Class with a 98.55% attendance rate for upper grades (3rd-5th grade).
All classes were given a dragon stuff animal that they keep for the week and return it at our next PBIS rally. Your dedication to showing up every day sets a shining example for our entire school.
Let’s continue to make attendance a priority. Together, we can help our students build a bright future—one school day at a time!

Bahia Vista Valet Drop Off Program |
Dear Bahia Vista Families,
We’re excited to partner with the AAA School Safety Patrol to make morning drop-off safe, efficient, and stress-free for all families.
Our Valet Program helps keep traffic flowing smoothly while ensuring students arrive safely on campus. Trained student safety patrollers, along with the school principal, will assist children as they exit vehicles in the designated valet zone each morning.
By following our valet procedures and the directions of our friendly safety patrol team, you’re helping create a safe and positive start to every school day. Our valet program will happen daily from 7:30 - 7:55 am, in front of the school. Our first day will be on Monday October 20.
To help our mornings run safely and efficiently, please follow these guidelines:
🌟 Before You Arrive
- Have backpacks, lunches, and goodbyes ready before entering the valet line.
- Students should be ready to hop out quickly and safely when it’s their turn.
🚙 In the Valet Line
Stay in Your Car
- Please remain in your vehicle at all times. Give your students their hugs/kisses before leaving for school.
- Our staff and safety patrol helpers will assist students as needed.
Pull All the Way Forward
- Keep traffic moving by pulling forward as directed by staff.
Use the Designated Drop-Off Zone Only
- For safety, please do not drop off in the crosswalk, or along the street.
Unload on the Curbside
- Students should exit on the right side (passenger side) of the vehicle only.
Stay Alert and Phone-Free
- Keep your eyes up and avoid distractions. Safety comes first!
Exit Carefully and Promptly
- Once your child is safely out, please continue forward so others may drop off too.
💛 A Few Friendly Reminders
- Be patient and kind—our goal is safety for everyone.
- Arrive a few minutes early to avoid the last-minute rush.
- Smile! A calm start helps our students begin their day on a positive note.
Thank you for your cooperation and support!
Together we can make drop-off smooth, safe, and stress-free for all our families.

This week, our school will proudly join all other schools in our district in participating in “Start With Hello” Week! Throughout the week, we will engage students in meaningful activities during lunch and recess that encourage everyone to build a welcoming and inclusive school culture.
What is “Start With Hello”?
“Start With Hello” is a violence prevention program designed to help children and youth minimize social isolation, empathize with others, and create a more inclusive and connected community.
The program focuses on three key steps:
-
See Someone Alone- Students learn to recognize when someone may be feeling isolated or left out, understand the difference between “healthy alone time” and loneliness, and see the importance of reaching out to others.
-
Reach Out and Help- Students develop strategies for connecting with peers and practice ways to overcome any nervousness about reaching out.
-
Start with Hello- Students apply what they’ve learned by initiating conversations, including others in activities, and fostering a sense of belonging and kindness across our school community.
We’ve created a presentation for teachers that outlines suggested classroom discussions and activities aligned with each day’s theme. In addition, a flyer is included below highlighting the lunch and recess activities that we’ll be leading throughout the week.
Together, we can help our students learn the power of a simple “hello” and how small acts of kindness can make a big difference.

This Wednesday, students and staff are encouraged to wear green for “Wear Green Wednesday” during Start with Hello Week!
Wearing green shows our unity, kindness, and inclusion and helps raise awareness about social isolation. The color green symbolizes change, growth, and harmony, which are at the heart of this program. By participating, we’re showing our solidarity with the Sandy Hook Promise, the organization behind this important initiative.
You can show your green spirit in any way you like, it doesn’t have to be clothing! It can be a green shirt, sweater, socks, scarf, hair accessory, earrings, or even a water bottle.
Let’s fill our school with green to show that we care and we’re all in this together! 💚
