Dear Bahia Vista Families,
Second Step Unit 2 Lesson 7- Managing Emotions
Students are learning how to recognize and calm strong emotions before reacting, helping them make safe, respectful, and responsible choices.
-
TK–K: Name feelings like mad, sad, or frustrated; practice belly breathing. (Tip: Practice belly breaths together at home.)
-
Grades 1–2: Notice body clues, use self-talk, and take deep breaths to regain control. (Tip: Model “Stop. Name your feeling. Calm down.”)
-
Grades 3–5: Pause before solving problems, practice positive self-talk, and use coping strategies. (Tip: Share how you manage big emotions with your child.)
Why It Matters:
Teaching emotion management supports focus, self-control, empathy, and a calmer, kinder school community. Thank you for supporting social-emotional learning at home!
Understanding the DRDP in TK
The Desired Results Developmental Profile (DRDP) helps teachers observe and track each child’s growth across key areas:
- Learning & thinking skills
- Social-emotional development
- Language & literacy
- Cognition & math
- Physical development
Teachers document skills through everyday activities and place children on a developmental continuum—emerging, developing, or well-established. DRDP assessments occur three times a year, helping teachers personalize learning and families celebrate growth.
UCSF Multitudes Testing for 2nd Grade
The UCSF Multitudes test is a short, fun, digital screening that helps teachers identify early signs of reading difficulties, in second graders. It looks at skills like word reading, spelling, and how quickly children can name letters.
Each test is done one-on-one with a teacher using a computer or tablet, and it usually takes about 12–13 minutes, with follow-up activities lasting around 9–10 minutes. The test is designed to be engaging and easy for all students.
This screening helps teachers spot students who might need extra reading support early, so they can get the help they need to succeed.
Book Character Day
We are excited to celebrate Book Character Day with a parade during morning recess at the Flagpole! Students are encouraged to dress up as their favorite book characters and join in the fun.
