Bahia Vista Elementary School

Curriculum & Instruction

Curriculum & Instruction

At Bahia Vista Elementary School, we are committed to providing all students with a high-quality, engaging, and inclusive educational experience. Our goal is to create a learning environment where every student feels valued, challenged, and supported in reaching their full potential.

Our teachers use standards-aligned curriculum, research-based instructional practices, and student learning data to provide meaningful learning experiences that meet the diverse needs of our students. We recognize and celebrate the cultural and linguistic strengths that students bring to our classrooms and strive to make learning accessible to all.

English Language Arts (ELA)

Curriculum: Arts & Letters

Bahia Vista uses Arts & Letters to support literacy instruction in grades K–5. This comprehensive curriculum integrates reading, writing, speaking, and listening while building students' knowledge of the world through engaging texts and meaningful discussions.

Through Arts & Letters, students develop their ability to:

  • Read and understand increasingly complex texts

  • Build vocabulary and background knowledge

  • Express their ideas through speaking and writing

  • Engage in collaborative discussions

  • Think critically and use evidence to support their thinking

Our teachers provide additional foundational literacy instruction and targeted support to help students develop the skills necessary to become confident, capable readers and writers.

Foundational Literacy & Phonics

Curriculum: Fundations

At Bahia Vista Elementary School, we use Fundations to support the development of foundational reading and spelling skills. Fundations provides explicit, systematic instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, word recognition, spelling, and handwriting.

Through engaging, multisensory learning activities, students develop essential literacy skills, including:

  • Recognizing letters and connecting them to their sounds

  • Blending sounds to read words

  • Segmenting words into individual sounds

  • Applying phonics patterns to reading and spelling

  • Developing reading accuracy and fluency

  • Building confidence as readers and writers

Fundations helps students build a strong foundation in literacy by providing structured, sequential instruction that supports the development of essential reading and writing skills.

Mathematics

Curriculum: CMC

Our mathematics instruction focuses on developing strong conceptual understanding, problem-solving skills, and mathematical reasoning.

Through our CMC curriculum, students engage in hands-on learning, explore multiple strategies, and participate in meaningful mathematical discussions.

Students are encouraged to:

  • Develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts

  • Explain their thinking and reasoning

  • Solve problems using a variety of strategies

  • Make connections between mathematical ideas

  • Collaborate and learn from one another

Our goal is to help students become confident mathematicians who understand not only how to solve problems, but why mathematical strategies work.

Transitional Kindergarten (TK)

Curriculum: Creative Curriculum

Our Transitional Kindergarten program provides a developmentally appropriate, play-based learning environment that supports the academic, social, emotional, and physical development of our youngest learners.

Using Creative Curriculum, students engage in hands-on investigations, purposeful play, and meaningful interactions that build foundational skills and foster curiosity.

TK learning experiences emphasize:

  • Oral language and early literacy development

  • Early mathematical thinking

  • Social-emotional development

  • Problem-solving and creativity

  • Independence and collaboration

Our TK classrooms provide a nurturing introduction to school while building the foundational skills students need for success in kindergarten and beyond.
